Put simply, the goal of somatics is body awareness.
"When we avoid our body, its sensations, and its emotions, we are in grave danger. Our spiritual function is sensation. The body is spiritual, it is not just a thing that holds our spirit. Western thought separates mind and body, but the soma is a cohesive unit encompassing the mind, the body and all the energy from within. If the definition of somatics isn't clear, remember the antonym is being out of touch with the body. Without somatic practices in place, our potential is diminished. We are less likely to experience pleasure, meaningful relationships and authentic spirituality.”

One of my teachers once said, to the effect of, that often the simplest of tasks require the most practice. For example, I find meditative breathing extremely challenging. I am currently practicing an eight count, where I breathe in for 8 seconds, I hold for 8 seconds, and I breathe out for 8 seconds. I thought it sounded simple at first, except I quickly found it to be a hard exercise without practice.
Controlling my breathing is not simple; it requires a great deal of practice, something that I expect to continue for quite some time, if not my entire life. The results of my practice are quite extraordinary. I feel calm, patient, and more capable of noticing and choosing how I respond to all sorts of different situations that occur in my life. This hasn't become a quick fix to road rage, and I'm practicing my patience while driving in different ways.
I see somatic awareness as a continual practice of liberation. This is about making my life better for myself. I differentiate the challenge of competition with connection, in which I strive to connect with myself and others daily. It sounds simple, and as I practice slowing down and noticing myself in this life, I learn more every day from a wonderful world filled with awareness.
“What separates this work from traditional massage therapy, erotic touch and sex work is that this work is transformational through its awareness and acknowledgment of the soma. This is about waking the body up to its potential. This is where the healing takes place."
I think awareness is one of the great challenges of our age. Society is often filled with noise and distraction that draw our awareness away from our bodies and our selves and then push us into a constant world of hierarchy, advertising, and easy living. Of course this experience is magnified if you're a minority in any way.
